Triangle body type (men)
On this site, triangle requires the waist to be smaller than both chest and hips and a hip circumference at least 3.6 inches (9.1 cm) larger than the chest. It is checked after oval and after the chest-leads rules, and before the second trapezoid route, so a hip lead of 3.6 inches returns triangle whatever the chest-to-waist difference.
These five categories and their decision order are defined by this site. The 3.6-inch and 9-inch cut-offs are borrowed from the women’s FFIT rules so that the numbers are consistent. This men’s classification rule set has no journal source and is not a published standard. The full rule set is on the methodology page.
This site’s five men’s types and the rule for each (inches), checked in this order
| Type | Rule | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | waist ≥ chest or waist ≥ hips | checked first; either condition alone is enough |
| Trapezoid (chest leads) | chest − hips ≥ 3.6 and chest − waist ≥ 9 | after oval is excluded |
| Inverted triangle | chest − hips ≥ 3.6 and chest − waist < 9 | after oval is excluded |
| Triangle | hips − chest ≥ 3.6 | after oval is excluded; no condition on the waist drop |
| Trapezoid (close chest and hips) | |chest − hips| < 3.6 and chest − waist ≥ 9 | after the rows above |
| Rectangle | |chest − hips| < 3.6 and chest − waist < 9 | everything that remains; the waist is smaller than both by the oval exclusion |
What the rule says
Hips minus chest is 3.6 inches or more, and the waist is smaller than both chest and hips (otherwise oval, which is checked first). The rule has no condition on the chest-to-waist difference: a 9-inch difference does not move a triangle result to trapezoid, because triangle is checked first.
How nearby results differ
- Rectangle: the waist smaller than both, |chest − hips| < 3.6, and chest − waist under 9.
- Trapezoid (close chest and hips): the waist smaller than both, |chest − hips| < 3.6, and chest − waist of 9 or more.
- Oval: the waist reaching the chest or the hips.
The calculator searches changes to one measurement at a time in 1 mm increments, up to 15 cm, and reports the smallest change that produces a different result. Ties are resolved in this order: chest, waist, hips. Re-check the measurement named in the note; the note does not mean that measurement was taken wrongly, only that the result is sensitive to it.
Styling options
The suggestions below are styling options organised by the effect you may want to try. They are not derived from the measurements, which describe three circumferences and nothing else, and none of them is required.
- If you want more visual width above, you could try a structured shoulder, a layered or patterned top, or a jacket with some shoulder shape.
- If you want ease through the hips: straight or relaxed-leg trousers cut with room at the seat and thigh; check the fit sitting and moving rather than trusting the cut name.
- If you prefer the proportion as it is: regular fits above and below, plain colours.
Questions people ask
What measurements make a triangle body type for men?
On this site: the waist smaller than both chest and hips, and hips at least 3.6 inches larger than the chest.
Is triangle the same as pear for men?
This site uses “triangle” for the specific rule above. It does not define “pear” as an equivalent category.
What is the difference between triangle and rectangle?
Rectangle requires a chest–hip difference of less than 3.6 inches in either direction, chest − waist under 9 inches, and the waist smaller than both. Triangle requires the hips at least 3.6 inches over the chest.
Does a 9-inch chest-to-waist difference change a triangle result?
No. Triangle is checked before the second trapezoid route, so hips 3.6 inches or more over the chest return triangle whatever the chest-to-waist difference.
Which measurement should I re-check if the result says I am near a boundary?
Re-check the measurement named in the stability note. The calculator compares single-measurement changes on a 1 mm grid across every rule and reports the smallest one; ties go to chest, then waist, then hips.
Check your own three measurements
Chest, waist and hips; the result shows the rule that fired and how far one measurement is from changing it. Nothing is uploaded.
