Inverted triangle body type (men)
On this site, inverted triangle requires the waist to be smaller than both chest and hips, a chest circumference at least 3.6 inches (9.1 cm) larger than the hips, and a chest-to-waist difference under 9 inches. The rule uses chest, waist and hip circumferences only; it does not measure shoulder width.
These five categories and their decision order are defined by this site. The 3.6-inch and 9-inch cut-offs are borrowed from the women’s FFIT rules so that the numbers are consistent. This men’s classification rule set has no journal source and is not a published standard. The full rule set is on the methodology page.
This site’s five men’s types and the rule for each (inches), checked in this order
| Type | Rule | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | waist ≥ chest or waist ≥ hips | checked first; either condition alone is enough |
| Trapezoid (chest leads) | chest − hips ≥ 3.6 and chest − waist ≥ 9 | after oval is excluded |
| Inverted triangle | chest − hips ≥ 3.6 and chest − waist < 9 | after oval is excluded |
| Triangle | hips − chest ≥ 3.6 | after oval is excluded; no condition on the waist drop |
| Trapezoid (close chest and hips) | |chest − hips| < 3.6 and chest − waist ≥ 9 | after the rows above |
| Rectangle | |chest − hips| < 3.6 and chest − waist < 9 | everything that remains; the waist is smaller than both by the oval exclusion |
What the rule says
Oval is checked first, so a waist at least as large as the chest or hips never reaches this rule — chest 44, waist 40, hips 39 inches is oval. With the waist smaller than both, chest minus hips of 3.6 inches or more and chest minus waist under 9 inches returns inverted triangle. If the chest-to-waist difference reaches 9 inches with the same chest lead, the result is trapezoid instead.
How nearby results differ
- Trapezoid: same chest lead, chest − waist of 9 inches or more.
- Rectangle: the waist smaller than both, |chest − hips| < 3.6, chest − waist under 9.
- Oval: the waist equal to or larger than the chest or the hips, checked before every other rule.
The calculator searches changes to one measurement at a time in 1 mm increments, up to 15 cm, and reports the smallest change that produces a different result. Ties are resolved in this order: chest, waist, hips. Re-check the measurement named in the note; the note does not mean that measurement was taken wrongly, only that the result is sensitive to it.
Styling options
The suggestions below are styling options organised by the effect you may want to try. They are not derived from the measurements, which describe three circumferences and nothing else, and none of them is required.
- If you want more volume below the waist, you could try straight or relaxed-leg trousers, or lighter colour below.
- If you want a quieter top: regular rather than slim fits through the chest, unstructured shoulders, plain darker tops.
- If you want to put the focus on the upper body: fitted shirts and structured jackets over straight trousers.
Questions people ask
What measurements make an inverted triangle body type for men?
On this site: the waist smaller than both chest and hips, chest at least 3.6 inches larger than the hips, and chest − waist under 9 inches.
Does the rule measure shoulders?
No. Shoulder width does not affect this result. When chest and hips differ by less than 3.6 inches, the result depends on the waist: oval is checked first, then the 9-inch chest-to-waist cut-off distinguishes trapezoid from rectangle.
What is the difference between inverted triangle and trapezoid?
Trapezoid needs chest − waist of 9 inches or more; inverted triangle has less. The chest lead over the hips can be the same.
Is inverted triangle the athletic body type?
This site uses “inverted triangle” for this measurement category. The result does not assess muscle, fitness or athletic ability.
Which measurement should I re-check if the result says I am near a boundary?
Re-check the measurement named in the stability note. The calculator compares single-measurement changes on a 1 mm grid across every rule and reports the smallest one; ties go to chest, then waist, then hips.
Check your own three measurements
Chest, waist and hips; the result shows the rule that fired and how far one measurement is from changing it. Nothing is uploaded.
