Rectangle body type (men)

On this site, rectangle requires three things: the waist smaller than both chest and hips, chest and hips differing by less than 3.6 inches (9.1 cm) in either direction, and a chest-to-waist difference under 9 inches. The under-9-inch limit applies to chest minus waist only; the hips-to-waist difference is not limited. It is not a body without a waist: the rule requires the waist to be smaller than both chest and hips.

These five categories and their decision order are defined by this site. The 3.6-inch and 9-inch cut-offs are borrowed from the women’s FFIT rules so that the numbers are consistent. This men’s classification rule set has no journal source and is not a published standard. The full rule set is on the methodology page.

TypeRuleNote
Ovalwaist ≥ chest or waist ≥ hipschecked first; either condition alone is enough
Trapezoid (chest leads)chest − hips ≥ 3.6 and chest − waist ≥ 9after oval is excluded
Inverted trianglechest − hips ≥ 3.6 and chest − waist < 9after oval is excluded
Trianglehips − chest ≥ 3.6after oval is excluded; no condition on the waist drop
Trapezoid (close chest and hips)|chest − hips| < 3.6 and chest − waist ≥ 9after the rows above
Rectangle|chest − hips| < 3.6 and chest − waist < 9everything that remains; the waist is smaller than both by the oval exclusion

What the rule says

Rectangle is what remains after the other rules: the waist is smaller than both chest and hips (otherwise oval), the chest does not lead the hips by 3.6 inches or more (otherwise trapezoid or inverted triangle), the hips do not lead the chest by 3.6 inches or more (otherwise triangle), and chest minus waist is under 9 inches (otherwise trapezoid by the second route). Chest 40, waist 31.5, hips 43 inches is rectangle: the hips-to-waist difference of 11.5 inches plays no part.

How nearby results differ

  • Trapezoid (close chest and hips): the same chest and hips, with chest − waist reaching 9 inches.
  • Inverted triangle: chest − hips reaching 3.6 inches, with the waist still smaller than both and chest − waist still under 9 — if the chest change also brings chest − waist to 9, the result is trapezoid instead.
  • Triangle: hips − chest reaching 3.6 inches.
  • Oval: the waist reaching the chest or the hips.

The calculator searches changes to one measurement at a time in 1 mm increments, up to 15 cm, and reports the smallest change that produces a different result. Ties are resolved in this order: chest, waist, hips. Re-check the measurement named in the note; the note does not mean that measurement was taken wrongly, only that the result is sensitive to it.

Styling options

The suggestions below are styling options organised by the effect you may want to try. They are not derived from the measurements, which describe three circumferences and nothing else, and none of them is required.

  • If you want the appearance of a waist: shirts with some suppression, jackets that nip in slightly, a mid-rise trouser with the shirt tucked.
  • If you want a straighter clothing silhouette, try regular-fit shirts, straight-leg trousers or unstructured jackets. Check for pulling when standing, sitting and moving.
  • If you want more visual width above: a structured shoulder or a layered top adds it; if below, straight or relaxed trousers.
FAQ

Questions people ask

What measurements make a rectangle body type for men?

On this site: the waist smaller than both chest and hips, chest and hips differing by less than 3.6 inches in either direction, and chest − waist under 9 inches.

Does rectangle mean I have no waist?

No. The waist must be smaller than both chest and hips. The under-9-inch limit applies specifically to chest minus waist.

Why did the calculator return rectangle?

Because none of the earlier rules matched: the waist is smaller than both chest and hips, neither chest nor hips leads the other by 3.6 inches or more, and chest minus waist is under 9 inches.

Which measurement should I re-check if the result says I am near a boundary?

Re-check the measurement named in the stability note. The calculator compares single-measurement changes on a 1 mm grid across every rule and reports the smallest one; ties go to chest, then waist, then hips.

Is rectangle a bad body type?

No. It is one of five categories describing how three circumferences relate. Nothing in the rules ranks them.
