Oval body type (men)
On this site, oval means the waist circumference is equal to or larger than the chest, or equal to or larger than the hips. Either condition alone is enough, and it is the first rule checked, so it takes precedence over every other result — chest 44, waist 40, hips 39 inches is oval even though the chest is the largest measurement. It describes a relationship between three circumferences; it is not a health assessment, and this site makes no health claim from it.
These five categories and their decision order are defined by this site. The 3.6-inch and 9-inch cut-offs are borrowed from the women’s FFIT rules so that the numbers are consistent. This men’s classification rule set has no journal source and is not a published standard. The full rule set is on the methodology page.

What the rule says
Waist ≥ chest, or waist ≥ hips. Either condition alone is enough, and the rule is checked before any other, so a body that would otherwise satisfy trapezoid, inverted triangle, triangle or rectangle returns oval once the waist reaches the chest or the hips.
How the other results differ
- All of them require the waist to be smaller than both chest and hips.
- Chest at least 3.6 inches over the hips: trapezoid if chest − waist is 9 inches or more, otherwise inverted triangle.
- Hips at least 3.6 inches over the chest: triangle.
- Chest and hips differing by less than 3.6 inches: trapezoid if chest − waist is 9 or more, otherwise rectangle.
The threshold is exactly waist equals chest or hips, so near it a small change in the waist reading changes the result.
The calculator searches changes to one measurement at a time in 1 mm increments, up to 15 cm, and reports the smallest change that produces a different result. Ties are resolved in this order: chest, waist, hips. Re-check the measurement named in the note; the note does not mean that measurement was taken wrongly, only that the result is sensitive to it.
Styling options
The suggestions below are styling options organised by the effect you may want to try. They are not derived from the measurements, which describe three circumferences and nothing else, and none of them is required.
- If you want a longer line through the middle: shirts worn untucked at a length that ends below the waistband, open jackets and cardigans, single-breasted rather than double-breasted.
- If you want the focus at the shoulders and neckline: a structured shoulder, a V or open collar, colour or pattern on top.
- If you want a fitted look, try a fitted shirt and check that it allows comfortable sitting and movement.

What measurements make an oval body type for men?
On this site: waist equal to or larger than the chest, or equal to or larger than the hips. Either is enough, and it is checked before every other rule.
Is oval the same as overweight?
No. Oval is a relationship between three circumferences — the waist reaching the chest or hips — and says nothing about weight, height or health.
What is the difference between oval and rectangle?
Rectangle needs the waist smaller than both chest and hips; oval is the waist reaching either of them.
Why is oval checked first?
So that a waist at least as large as the chest or hips is never reported as trapezoid, inverted triangle, triangle or rectangle by the later rules, which assume the waist is smaller.
